Energy Saving Tips
One of the largest contributing factors to greenhouse gas emissions comes from energy consumed in the household, and the bulk of these emissions comes from the energy used in producing hot water. Water heating accounts for between 25 and 50 per cent of the average household's total electricity and gas energy bills, but there are now a number of ways to reduce the amount of energy used to produce hot water and reduce energy bills.
Top tips for hot water energy saving:
1. Choose an environmentally friendly water heater, such as a solar hot water system, or heat pump system.
2. Consider the positioning of your water heater. It is more efficient to position it close to where it will be used most.
3. By installing AAA rated showerheads you will reduce the amount of hot water you use in your home.
4. Do not set your thermostat too high. Between 60 - 65øC on storage hot water systems and 50øC on instantaneous systems is sufficient for most households, and reduces the need to overheat water.
5. Use water ionizers
Extra energy saving ideas for your home:
6. Install a gas cooktop and oven. These appliances produce less greenhouse gas emissions than their electric equivalents.
7. Have insulation installed throughout your home. Insulation acts as a barrier to heat flow, thereby allowing a home to be warm in winter and cool in summer. A well insulated and well designed home will provide year round comfort, cutting cooling and heating bills by up to half.
8. Turn electrical appliances, such as air-conditioners, computers, televisions and stereos off, instead of putting them into standby. Even while in standby they use electricity.
Tip - If your hot water system breaks down, don't panic, you have time to change to solar.
If your current hot water system fails, and you would prefer to change to a solar hot water system, you can still be in hot water today. Electric or gas boosted solar water heaters that feature solar panels on the roof and a storage tank at ground level, can be installed and operated without the collectors. You can have hot water again that day, and have your plumber return another day to install the solar collectors. Solutions like this make it is easy to become environmental friendly.
